Here’s how we’d order the day — we live here — plus the tip on where to stop and eat, which is usually what you end up remembering about a day out.

The morning: the port Leonardo drew

Start at the Porto Canale, the heart of the town and the postcard you already have in mind: coloured houses, quaysides, and in the water the historic boats with their brightly painted lugsails. The canal has a serious past: in 1502 Leonardo da Vinci surveyed and drew it for Cesare Borgia.

The moored boats are the floating section of the Maritime Museum and you can look at them from the quay for free, simply by walking past. If you want the full story there’s the indoor section too, half an hour and a ticket of a few euros — current opening times on the official website.

A stroll through the old town

From there you slip into the centre, and in ten minutes you see the two things most visitors walk straight past. The first is Piazza delle Conserve: those big funnels dug into the ground are sixteenth-century ice houses, packed with pressed snow to keep fish before refrigerators existed. Three of them have been restored, and there’s a small market around them in the morning.

The second is Piazza Spose dei Marinai, towards the western pier: a bronze statue of a woman and two children watching the sea, waiting for the boats to come home. It tells you more about this town than most guidebooks do.

If you have time and you like small museums, Casa Moretti — the home of the poet Marino Moretti — sits on the canal and is visited with a guide (openings and tours on the official website), and near the station there’s Spazio Pantani, dedicated to cyclist Marco Pantani; days and times on the official website.

Lunch — and here’s our tip

By midday you’ll be back on the canal, facing a hundred restaurants side by side, laminated menus outside and someone waving you in. That’s where a good day quietly turns into an ordinary meal.

We’re in Villamarina, four kilometres further south: ten minutes by car, or the bus along the coast. We won’t tell you we’re convenient — we’ll tell you it’s worth the trip. Here the fish comes in fresh every morning, it’s cooked the way it has always been cooked around here, and the people sitting down are mostly locals rather than passers-by. A seafood crudo, a first course, enough time to actually sit at the table: you’ll go back into town for the afternoon a different person. Seafood cooking since 1987.

The afternoon: the sea, or a boat trip

After lunch, take your pick. There’s the beach, wide and well equipped, which in Cesenatico starts a short walk from the centre. Or, if you want to properly see the sea, there are boat trips leaving from the piers: they head out towards the offshore platforms, you often cross paths with dolphins and with the gulls following the wake, and there’s usually a fish snack served on board. Departures change with the season and some trips are worth booking: times and operators’ contacts on the official tourism website.

If you’d rather keep moving, take the cycle path to the Parco di Levante, the green lung with its little lake and plenty of shade: ten minutes by bike from the centre.

The evening: markets and a walk along the canal

The best moment of the day is sunset over the canal port, when the lights come on along the boats. In summer Cesenatico is also the town of evening markets: a different area every night — crafts and flea market in the old town, stalls along the seafront avenues — usually from 8 pm to midnight. The calendar changes from year to year: here’s the current one. The big weekly market is usually on Friday morning, in the stadium area.

And if the evening finds you down our way — the Viale Carducci night market runs right past our door — you know where to come for dinner.

Quick tips

Don’t miss: Porto Canale and the historic boats, Piazza delle Conserve, Piazza Spose dei Marinai.

Museums: Maritime Museum (floating section free from the quay), Casa Moretti, Spazio Pantani — times and tickets on the official websites.

On the water: boat trips from the piers, often with dolphin sightings; some trips need booking.

Evenings: summer markets, a different area each night, usually 8 pm–midnight.

Lunch (or dinner): La Romantica, Viale Carducci 319, Villamarina — 10 minutes from the centre.
