From inside, they don’t. Anyone who lives here knows that between Zadina and Villamarina everything changes — the noise, the age of the people around you, the parking, even the best time to turn up. If you still have to choose where to stay, this is the map a neighbour would draw for you.

How the coast is laid out, north to south

Cesenatico is cut in two by the canal harbour, and the beaches make sense read from there.

Zadina, at the far north, is the quietest: pine woods behind it, less concrete, and people who go usually go back for exactly that. It’s the only stretch where the green almost reaches the sand.

The centre, either side of the canal — Ponente and Levante — is the convenient beach: step off your sunbed and you’re in town, with the museums, the markets and the evening life all on foot. In exchange it’s the busiest of the lot, and in August parking is a competitive sport.

Going south you reach Valverde and then Villamarina, which is where we are: fine sand, water that deepens slowly, beach clubs one after the other and the feel of a neighbourhood rather than a resort. Families come back to the same clubs year after year, and the children find last summer’s friends waiting.

Further down Cesenatico ends and Gatteo Mare begins — a different municipality, an identical beach, and close enough to walk to from Villamarina without noticing.

The Levante pier at dawn — Photo: Federica.tamburini.75, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0

Where the Blue Flags are (and what they mean)

In 2026 Cesenatico holds the Blue Flag again, the European award that looks at water quality, services and environmental management. Two stretches are recognised: the Levante shore in the Valverde-Villamarina section, and Zadina Ponente. Neighbouring Gatteo a Mare is on the list too (the official list comes from the Italian Ministry of Tourism).

For anyone choosing: the southern stretch, from Valverde down to Gatteo Mare, is recognised end to end. We’re not telling you that because we live here — we’re telling you because it’s in the list.

And there’s a second award that matters to parents: Gatteo Mare is among the beaches flagged by Italian paediatricians with the Green Flag, for its gently shelving seabed and calm water.

Beach club or free beach?

Romagna has a reputation here and it earns it: the beach clubs are properly equipped — umbrella, loungers, showers, play areas, beach volleyball, entertainment, usually a bar that works. You pay, but you’re comfortable and the children have something to do.

Free beaches exist, mainly near the piers and at Zadina, and they’re fine for a morning: bring your own umbrella, and bear in mind that facilities are what they are.

One practical tip from people who live here: in July and August the beach empties between one and three. It’s the worst hour for the sun and the best for parking — and, as it happens, the hour when lunch is served.

How to choose, in one line each

Want the town at your feet and the evening life? The centre, Ponente or Levante.

Want quiet and pine woods? Zadina.

Small children, and everything on foot without getting back in the car? Villamarina, Valverde, Gatteo Mare — the southern stretch.

Lunch, without loading everyone back into the car

The classic seaside-holiday mistake goes like this: it’s two o’clock, everyone’s hungry, and to eat something decent you have to pack the family into the car and go hunting for a parking space in town.

If you’re staying on the southern stretch, that problem doesn’t exist: we’re at Viale Carducci 319 in Villamarina, a short walk from the beach clubs. Fish bought that morning, high chairs and child-sized portions, and time to eat slowly while outside the sun is at its worst. Then back under the umbrella. Seafood cooking since 1987.

Quick tips

Zadina (north): the quietest, pine woods behind.
